ilwr Morganwg
is a collection
of individuals from all walks of life drawn together by an
interest in the life of mediaeval professional longbow archers. Our
society attempts to re-create the camp of a group of mercenary
archers from about 1345 to 1490. We are usually depicting a
group of such men and women en route to a campaign or acting
as escort to a group of pilgrims on the road to Canterbury or
even Rome. As mercenaries, we would not always have had the luxury
of an entourage of skilled craftsmen available to a large army.
We have to rely on ourselves and as such are capable of the
various skills on view at the camp, including the making of
longbows, arrows, leather goods, bowstrings and clothes, together
with all the vital aspects of camp life such as field cooking and
maintaining equipment.

Of course, the primary interest of Milwr Morganwg is demonstrating the use of the longbow in mediaeval warfare. At one of our events, you'll get to watch armour piercing and speed shooting displays, hear talks about the longbow's distinguished history and how the weapon has left us a linguistic legacy that survives even to this day - and you'll see what happens when a longbow goes up against a crossbow! At each demonstration, two children will be "recruited" and dressed as soldiers from different periods of the longbow's history, so no-one gets left out.
Despite the obvious proficiency of the animated gentleman below, using a longbow without stapling one's foot to the floor is an acquired skill, so unfortunately we can't let people try their hand at every event we do. All is not lost however - if you're really keen to give the longbow a go, the trained archers of Milwr Morganwg are on hand at our "Have-A-Go" events to put you through your paces without hazard to life, limb or dignity... and without any undue footwear perforation!
